Narrative

In a show like Luther the narrative point  is crutial as the audience is more likley to switch over if they do not find it appealing. Luthers opening scene is effecrive as most crime dramas have a 5 minute climax clip to get the audience gripped an wanting to find out more, so they have to wait and watch the title scene and watch after to find out what happens after. Enigmas are used in crime dramas like luther to help the audience get invlolved. In this case Luthers enigmas are already known to the audience before the dectective "Luther", this makes it exciting for the audience as they are watching to see whethere or not the can solve the crime. The quests of the protagonist, are also and exciting point for the audience as they may sometimes contain chases or a timed amount of time to find something out.

Setting

A setting in any crime drama is significant and plays a vital role in the specific audiences which will or won't watch a crime drama. For example, an audience who live in and around rough areas of london are more likley to watch a show like Luther, where it is set in theses areas, audience find it easy to converse with these types of crime dramas as they can associate with the surrounding, crime, and types of people that are involved in these crime drama's. Although just as people may like to associate with familiar settings, some people like to get away from reality and watch something which makes them more able to relax knowning that they may never go or visit this area. CSI is a crime drama that appeals to many people as it is glamorous and for 50 minutes people can forget they're everyday lives and pretend they are a dectective living in an glamorous and rich area like miami when they may live in a concil estate and may never actually live this life. This gives oppotunitys to make an area famous or well known as it has been on a big hit crime drama.

Set Pieces

• The Laborotory    

1. The laborety is key when watching CSI as it is a technical modern crime drama. It shows the audience the the uncover of key key clues as to how the murder/accident happend.

2. It can play a big part in the scene as main clues may be uncovered an affect the storyline drastically, shows the audience the technial side of the investigation which and audience typically wouldn't see.

3. The iconography used is that mainly scientist would be found in the laboretorys.

4. This plays an important part in audience pleasures as they are close to cracking the case and tension can be easily made.

5.Technical jargon may be used in the laboretory as they may be talking about body or equitment names.

• Interegation scenes

1. There is always a tense moment in intergoation scences, where the suspect is either found out or plays along so it takes the dectectives longer to find out who commited the crime, by longing out the interegation process more tension is made and there for more audience pleasures are made.

2. Interagation is important as there can be more than one person to be interagted but they may both be talling the wrong or right story and itss up to the dectectives to work out and fool the suspects in to making mistakes that may lead to thier conviction.

3. A play room with a glass of water and a recording tape is normally associated with an interagtion room which can make the process more tense.

4. The tension that can be created can give the audience pleasures as they may know who commited the crime and it becomes fustrating as they know who hs done it, or they may not know whos done it so it is more addictive to watch and find out who it was.

5. Plain simple language is used so it is clear to the suspect what is going to happen or why something has happen with lots of questions.

1. In this scene a piece of evidence is normally found and may lead towards the ucover of the murder or mysterie.
2. It can cause tension gives an idea of who the suspect is or how the susperct could have have caused it.

Week 1 Crime drama studies Analysis:
Summary: CSI (Crime scene investigation) is an american based modern crime drama. Each episode consists of the same content but presented in a different way (different crime but presented the same way each episode), the normal episode is usually around 50 minutes long an episode, this differensciates when it is a series finally or a special episode. The characters are a team of investigator with no main character, most of these characters appear in the every episode. Although there is not a main character "Heratio" is seen as the most important character in the group.
Codes and Conventions: CSI is a typical American drama with the a team of investigators, forensics team and lead roles such as "Heratio". The audience it is aimed at is teenagers and adults as it is aired sometimes before or just after the watershed which suggests that it may contain some violence and gore. It is shown by Channel 5 a big TV channel for American crime dramas so is easily reconisable and easily viewable by other crime watchers.
Description of episode watched (episode 10, series 12)(MIA/NYC NonStop):
After sixteen-year-old Laura Spellman finds the brutally slain bodies of her parents, Horatio Caine vows to personally track down the killer and let Laura know she is safe. A scrap of paper with the lettering from a car rental company leads the CSIs to an important clue: the killer flew in from New York. Determined to keep his promise to Laura, Horatio boards a plane to New York, on the tail of Nick Murdoch, whom he believes is the killer.
Meanwhile in New York, NYPD CSI Mac Taylor is called to the scene of a murder of an undercover officer identified as Nick Murdoch who has been strangled. Horatio arrives in New York and the two CSIs realize that the murderer had stolen Murdoch's identity. Mac agrees to hand over jurisdiction to MDPD. Their investigations lead them to one of New York City's richest families, the Hanovers. Michael Hanover, Sr. was murdered while his son survived the attack. The two teams must now find the link between the murders of two unrelated families and bring the perpetrator to justice before he strikes again.

Summary: Whitechapel is an english crime drama, of where the crime is based around a historical crime event, so the crime is replicated in a modern way. It is a series, that is aired a new year for a new series.
Codes and Conventions: Whitechapel is a typical english drama with the main detective(character) as a white british male. The audience it is aimed at is teenagers and adults as it is aired just after the watershed which suggests that it may contain some violence and swearing with adult themes. It is shown by ITV a big british TV channel for crime drama so is easily reconisable by other crime watchers.
Description of episode watched (episode 4, series 3): In this episode, it was based around a person who decides to kill people slowly by using poison, the twist is that he has mental issues and is unaware of what he is doing as he has an alter ego. This then turns into a chase to find the killer who is unaware that he is a killer making it more difficult for the police department to find the killer. This is a good way of keeping audiences coming back as it is easy to get involved in and ends on a cliff hanger each week so it become addicting wanting to know what is going to happen next week. This helps to continuealy appeal to a specific audience as the become involved in the murder solving.

The episode is shown in a dark kind of way, with dull lighting and melodic ways of speaking. This opens it up to be watched by an audience who are interested in crime drama's like series where they can get involved and be able to relate more to the storylines than that of something like CSI.
